Case Study: Fibre Installation for Burnham Market, North Norfolk

The Project

The team at 2 Rent partnered with Upp, MakeHappen and Norfolk County Council to install 3.5km of fibre optic infrastructure to the carriageway in Burnham Market during the peak summer holiday season.

The Challenge

We needed to find a solution for implementing an extensive fibre optic installation on a major bus route during high tourist activity, requiring minimal disruption to the public and local transport services.

Our Solution

Given the project’s timing and location, the only feasible solution was nighttime operations, allowing us to carry out the work while addressing the local community and traffic concerns.

A self-contained setup ensured all materials were pre-delivered to a secure site, reducing the need for external support and minimising our operational footprint. On day 1, the process kicked off at 13:00 with the delivery of our materials; by 19:00, the road closures were set up, and our CleanFast Microtrencher began cutting the first trench.

We followed the microtrencher, installing the ducting and fine fill before our InnoMiser batched the flowable, self-levelling concrete on site and simultaneously pumped it into the trench. The concrete cured in just one hour, allowing us to complete the final reinstatement and open the road by 7 a.m. each morning.

The Results

As our innovative process worked in tandem, we were able to install 350m of fibre each night, wrapping up the whole project in just two weeks—at industry-leading speed. This not only got the road back to normal by 7 a.m. each morning but also meant we finished the job ahead of schedule.

What The Locals Thought

Thanks to some clever planning and cutting-edge tech, we pulled off a project that was fast, efficient, and kept the local community happy.

John, Local Resident: “The technology is astonishing, to be honest with you, it’s the most brilliant piece of kit I’ve ever seen […] it’s so quick and so precise and so transformative in its effect because out in rural areas like this, it means everything to have very high-level broadband […] what’s been made possible is just a game changer for everybody and I feel incredibly lucky to be a beneficiary of it.”
